Neat, healthy hedges across Greater Manchester

A good hedge gives privacy, shelter and a softer boundary than a fence, but it needs regular cutting to stay dense and in shape. Left for a few seasons, it can swallow a path, shade the garden and become a big job.

We trim and reduce hedges of all kinds for homes and businesses across Manchester, from front garden privet and box to tall leylandii and mixed boundary hedges.

Trimming or reducing your hedge

Not every hedge needs the same treatment. Here is the difference between the two jobs we are asked for most.

A regular trim

The sides and top are cut back to the previous shape, keeping the hedge dense and neat. Most hedges benefit from this once or twice a year.

A reduction

An overgrown hedge is cut back harder in height or width. Some species regrow well from old wood, while conifers such as leylandii will not, so we only cut back as far as the hedge can recover from.

A staged reduction

Where a hedge needs a big cut, it can be done one side at a time over separate visits, which gives the plants a better chance of filling back in.

How we carry out the work

How we cut a hedge

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Check for nesting birds

Hedges are favourite nesting spots, so we check carefully before cutting, especially in spring and summer.

Protect the area below

Sheets are laid along the base where possible so clippings do not end up in borders, gravel or on the lawn.

Cut to a clean, even line

Sides are cut slightly narrower at the top than the bottom so light reaches the base and the hedge stays thick lower down.

Clear and take away

Clippings are collected, paths and drives are swept, and all the green waste is loaded and taken away.

Hedge cutting questions

Can I have my hedge cut during nesting season?

It is not illegal to cut a hedge in spring or summer, but it is an offence to damage or destroy an active nest. The main nesting season runs roughly from March to August, so we check carefully and leave any section with an active nest.

How often should a hedge be cut?

Most garden hedges need cutting once or twice a year to stay neat and dense. Fast-growing hedges such as leylandii and privet may need more frequent trims to stop them getting away from you.

Can you reduce a very overgrown leylandii hedge?

Yes, but with care. Leylandii does not regrow from bare brown wood, so cutting the sides back too far can leave permanent bare patches. We reduce the height and trim the sides back only as far as there is green growth.

Do you take the hedge clippings away?

Yes. All clippings are collected and taken away with us, and paths, drives and lawns are swept or raked clear.
