Local Manchester Timber Fence Contractors

A fence takes a beating from Manchester wind and rain, and most failures start below ground: posts set too shallow, footings that hold water, or panels sitting on wet soil. We fit timber fencing across Greater Manchester with the groundwork done properly, so the line stays straight and the posts stay firm.

We use pressure-treated timber and give you a choice of timber or concrete posts, with gravel boards (also called kick boards) to keep the panels off the ground. Gates can be hung to match.

What Styles of Fencing are Available in Manchester?

The right style depends on how much privacy you want, how exposed the garden is and the look you're after. These are the timber options we're asked about most.

Traditional Fence Panels

Ready-made timber panels slotted between posts. A quick, tidy way to enclose a garden, and a single damaged panel is easy to replace later.

Closeboard Fencing

Overlapping vertical boards fixed to rails on site. Heavier and stronger than most panels, and a good choice for exposed boundaries.

Slatted and Contemporary Fencing

Horizontal boards with small gaps for a modern look that still lets some light and air through.

Bespoke Designs

Different heights, widths and board thicknesses to suit a sloping garden, an awkward boundary or a particular style.

Timber Gates

Gates hung on solid posts to match the new fence, for side access or the garden path.

Planning the Right Fence for Your Boundary

Free Fencing & Landscaping Design Ideas

At the free quote visit we look at the whole boundary, not just the panels: slopes, existing walls, trees and roots, and where gates need to go. On a sloping garden we'll explain how the panels can be stepped so each one sits level.

If the fence is part of a bigger change, we can suggest how it ties in with a new patio, lawn or planting, so the garden comes together as one scheme.

How we carry out the work

How We Install a Timber Fence

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Measure and Mark Out

We measure the run, agree the line with you and mark the post positions so panels fit evenly, without a narrow cut panel at the end.

Clear the Old Fence

Old panels and posts come out, along with old concrete where it's in the way, and the waste is taken away.

Set the Posts

Holes are dug to a good depth and posts are set plumb in concrete, shaped at the top so water runs off rather than pooling around the timber.

Fit Boards, Panels and Gates

Gravel boards go in first, then the panels or boards, checked for level along the run. Gates are hung last and adjusted to swing and latch cleanly.

Timber Fencing Questions

Should I choose timber or concrete posts?

Concrete posts don't rot and suit exposed gardens, and they pair well with concrete gravel boards. Timber posts have a softer, more natural look. We'll explain both at the quote visit.

What are gravel boards for?

Gravel boards run along the bottom of the fence so the panels or boards stay off the soil. That stops the timber sitting wet, which is where rot usually starts, and a damaged gravel board is far cheaper to swap than a panel.

Can you fence a sloping garden?

Yes. On a slope we usually step the panels so each one sits level, with the gravel boards taking up the gap underneath. With closeboard fencing the boards can follow the slope instead.

Do you take the old fence away?

Yes. We remove the old panels and posts, break out old concrete where needed and take the waste away, so you're left with a clean, finished boundary.

How should I look after a new timber fence?

Pressure-treated timber doesn't need treating straight away, but a coat of fence stain or preserver every few years keeps it looking good. Keep soil, plants and climbers from piling against the boards so they can dry out.
