Keeping trees healthy and in proportion

Pruning is often the better alternative to felling. A well-pruned tree lets light into the garden and house, stays clear of roofs and fences, and keeps its natural shape rather than ending up as a bare stump of a tree.

We prune for homeowners and commercial clients across Manchester and Greater Manchester, cutting back to suitable growth points rather than topping branches off. Hard, careless cuts lead to weak regrowth and decay, which is the opposite of what you want.

Types of tree pruning explained

Each type of pruning does a different job. Often a tree needs a combination of two or more.

Crown reduction

The overall height and spread of the crown is reduced by cutting branches back to healthy side growth, keeping a natural shape while making the tree smaller.

Crown lifting

The lowest branches are removed to raise the canopy, giving clearance over a lawn, path, drive or road and letting light in underneath.

Crown thinning

Selected inner branches are removed to reduce density, so more light and wind pass through without changing the size or outline of the tree.

Deadwood removal

Dead, dying and broken branches are taken out before they fall, which makes the tree safer and removes a common entry point for decay.

How we carry out the work

How we prune a tree

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Agree what you want

We look at the tree with you and agree the aim, whether that is more light, clearance from the house or a smaller, tidier shape.

Check consent and nesting

We check with the council for a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area and inspect the tree for nesting birds before work begins.

Make clean, considered cuts

Branches are cut back to suitable growth points, with heavier limbs lowered in a controlled way so nothing below is damaged.

Clear the cuttings

All branches and leaves are taken away and the area under the tree is raked clear before we leave.

Tree pruning questions

When is the best time to prune a tree?

For most trees, late autumn to late winter is ideal: the tree is dormant, it is easier to see the branch structure and birds are not nesting. Some species, such as cherries and birches, are better pruned at other times, so we advise on your particular tree.

How much can safely be taken off?

Removing too much at once stresses a tree and triggers weak regrowth. We remove only what is needed to meet your aim, and if a large reduction is wanted it can be better done in stages.

Is pruning better than felling?

Often, yes. If the issue is light, size or clearance, a reduction or crown lift usually solves it while keeping the tree. If the tree is dead, unstable or simply in the wrong place, felling may be the honest answer.

Can you prune a tree with a Tree Preservation Order?

Only with consent from the council. We check whether a tree is protected before any work and can help you understand what needs applying for.
