Resin bound patios with a seamless, permeable finish

A resin bound patio is dried natural aggregate mixed with clear resin and trowelled by hand into one smooth surface. The stones are fully coated rather than scattered on top, so there are no loose chippings, and rain drains straight through the tiny gaps between them.

The finish is only as good as the base underneath. We lay resin over a sound, porous base, usually open-graded tarmac or suitable concrete, with firm edging so the edges can't crumble. Laying over cracked or moving ground is the main reason resin patios fail, so we never cut that corner.

Resin bound, resin bonded and overlays explained

Resin bound

Aggregate mixed with resin and trowelled level. Permeable, smooth underfoot and free of loose stones, this is what most people mean by a resin patio.

Resin bonded

Resin spread on a base with loose stone scattered over the top. It gives a grippy texture but isn't permeable, and some stone can work loose over time.

Laying over an existing base

Sound, crack-free concrete or tarmac can sometimes be overlaid, which saves digging out. We check it carefully first, because any movement below will show through the resin.

Why choose Nice & Tidy

Why homeowners trust us with resin patios

Resin is unforgiving of short cuts, so we treat the groundwork and the weather as seriously as the finish. As a family-run, fully insured local business, we stand behind the way we work.

Base first

We only lay resin on a base that is sound, porous and properly edged.

Weather-aware planning

Resin needs dry conditions, so we plan around the forecast rather than rushing it down.

How we carry out the work

How we lay a resin patio

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Prepare the base

We dig out and lay a compacted sub-base topped with a porous binder course, or repair and prime a suitable existing base.

Edge and protect

Edging is fixed to hold the resin in place, and walls, doors and drains are masked off before mixing starts.

Mix and trowel

Resin and dried aggregate are mixed in small batches and trowelled to an even depth on a dry day, so the finish is consistent across the patio.

Cure and handover

The surface is left to cure before use. We'll tell you when it is safe to walk on and how to keep it looking its best.

Resin patio questions

Does water drain through a resin patio?

Yes, as long as it is resin bound and laid over a porous base. Water passes through the surface and into the ground below rather than pooling, which is why the base matters so much.

Can resin go over my existing patio slabs?

Not usually. Slab joints and any rocking slabs tend to show through and crack the resin. Sound concrete or tarmac can sometimes be overlaid, and we'll tell you honestly at the survey.

How soon can we use the patio?

Curing depends on the temperature and the resin used, but a resin patio is typically ready for foot traffic within a day or so. We'll give you clear guidance on the day.

Do weeds grow through resin bound surfaces?

Weeds cannot root up through a properly laid resin bound surface. Seeds blown in can occasionally take hold in surface dirt, which a regular sweep or rinse soon deals with.

How do I look after a resin patio?

Sweep it regularly and give it a gentle wash now and then to keep the pores clear. Avoid harsh solvents and very high-pressure washing close to the surface.
