Block paved patios built on a solid base

Block paving is not just for driveways. Laid in a garden, small concrete or clay blocks make a hard-wearing patio that can follow curves, wrap around steps and borders, and be laid in patterns from herringbone to basketweave. It also ties in neatly if your drive is already block paved.

The blocks are laid on a screeded sand bed over a compacted sub-base, held in by edge courses set in concrete, then vibrated in and jointed with kiln-dried sand. If a block is ever stained or damaged, it can be lifted and replaced without breaking up the patio.

Block paving patterns for patios

Herringbone

Blocks interlock at an angle for a strong, busy pattern that looks at home in both modern and traditional gardens.

Basketweave

Pairs of blocks set at right angles for a classic, woven look that suits smaller seating areas.

Stretcher bond

Simple staggered rows, like brickwork. Laid across the garden it can make a narrow space feel wider.

Borders and soldier courses

A contrasting edge course frames the patio and doubles as the restraint that stops the blocks from spreading.

How we carry out the work

How we build a block paved patio

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Set out and dig

We mark out the shape, set levels with a fall away from the house and dig out to the depth the base needs.

Base and edging

The sub-base is laid and compacted in layers, then the edge course is set in concrete to lock everything in.

Lay the pattern

Blocks are laid onto a screeded sand bed in your chosen pattern, with clean cuts around the edges and any drains.

Compact and joint

A plate compactor beds the blocks in, then kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints until they are full and firm.

Block paving patio questions

Is block paving a good choice for a patio?

Yes, especially where you want a hard-wearing surface that can be shaped around curves or matched to a block paved drive. It is also one of the easiest surfaces to repair, as single blocks can be lifted and replaced.

Will weeds grow between the blocks?

Full, well compacted joints leave little room for weeds, but seeds can still settle in the sand over time. Topping up the joints and an occasional brush keeps them under control.

Clay or concrete blocks?

Concrete blocks come in a wide range of colours and finishes. Clay pavers hold their colour particularly well and have a more traditional look. We can show you both at the visit.

Does a block paved patio need a drain?

Most patios shed water with a fall towards a lawn or border. Where the levels or the layout do not allow that, we fit a channel drain so water has somewhere to go.
