Tarmac drives built from the ground up

Tarmac is a practical choice for drives that take a lot of use. It gives a smooth, dark, joint-free surface that is quick to sweep and copes well with cars turning on it.

A good tarmac drive starts with a properly dug and compacted sub-base, then the tarmac is laid hot and rolled before it cools. We finish the edges with kerbs or blocks so the surface stays crisp.

Why choose Nice & Tidy

Why choose us to lay your tarmac

Tarmac is unforgiving if the base or the timing is wrong. We get the groundwork right and lay while the material is at the right temperature.

Firm foundations

A compacted sub-base stops ruts and dips forming where the car sits.

Drainage planned in

Tarmac is not permeable, so we set falls and channels to deal with the water.

Clean edges

Kerbs or block edging keep the tarmac from crumbling at the sides.

Tarmac pricing depends on the size and how much groundwork is needed, so we quote after a visit.

How we carry out the work

How we lay a tarmac driveway

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Dig out

The old drive and soil are removed to make room for the sub-base and tarmac layers.

Edge and base

Edging is set first, then crushed stone is laid and compacted with falls set for drainage.

Lay hot

Tarmac arrives hot and is spread and levelled quickly, while it is still workable.

Roll and finish

The surface is rolled to compact it, edges are sealed neatly and the area is cleaned down.

Tarmac driveway questions

When can I drive on new tarmac?

Tarmac hardens as it cools, but it stays slightly soft for a while, especially in warm weather. We will tell you when it is fine to drive on, and it helps to avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary for the first few weeks.

Is tarmac allowed on a front driveway?

Tarmac is not permeable, so on a front drive over five square metres the water needs to run onto a garden area or into a soakaway or drain designed for it. We plan the drainage so this is covered.

Can you tarmac over my old drive?

Laying fresh tarmac over a failing surface usually just copies its cracks and dips. In most cases we dig out and build a proper base so the new drive lasts.

Does tarmac fade?

Tarmac starts very black and gradually lightens to a dark grey as the surface weathers. This is normal and does not affect how it performs.
