Retaining walls for sloping gardens

A retaining wall holds back soil so a sloping garden can become level terraces for a patio, a lawn or planting. Unlike a freestanding wall, it is pushed on constantly by the ground behind it, so it has to be designed and built with that load in mind.

We build retaining walls in brick, concrete block, timber sleepers and natural stone. Whatever the material, the wall sits on a proper footing and has drainage behind it, because water building up in the soil is the most common reason retaining walls bulge, crack or lean.

Retaining wall options

Brick

A smart, long-lasting finish that can match your house or other garden walls, built on a concrete footing.

Concrete block

Strong and economical, often faced with brick or stone or rendered for a cleaner look.

Timber sleepers

A natural, quick-to-build option for lower walls and raised beds, fixed securely so they cannot be pushed out.

Natural stone

Characterful and well suited to traditional and cottage gardens, laid on a solid base with drainage behind.

Why drainage behind a retaining wall matters

When soil gets saturated it becomes much heavier and pushes harder against the wall. Without a way out for that water, even well built walls can start to bow or crack.

We backfill behind the wall with free-draining stone, lay a perforated pipe at the base where it is needed and leave weep holes so water can escape. Taller walls, walls near a house, drive or boundary, and walls holding back very wet ground may need input from a structural engineer, and we will tell you at the survey if we think yours does.

How we carry out the work

How we build a retaining wall

No pressure at any stage, and nothing is booked until you have the price in writing.

Assess the slope

We measure the height to be retained, look at the soil and any water on site, and check what sits above and below the wall.

Excavate and footing

The bank is cut back safely and a footing is laid on firm ground to carry the wall and the soil behind it.

Build and drain

The wall goes up in stages, with drainage pipe, weep holes and free-draining backfill placed as it rises.

Finish and landscape

We cap the wall, level the ground above and below and leave the area ready for a patio, lawn or planting.

Retaining wall questions

Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall?

Low garden retaining walls usually do not. Taller walls, walls close to buildings or driveways, and walls holding back wet or unstable ground may need a structural engineer, and we will flag that at the survey.

Why are there holes at the bottom of a retaining wall?

Those are weep holes. They let water drain out from behind the wall so pressure does not build up and push it over.

Are sleeper retaining walls a good idea?

They work well for lower walls and raised beds and have a natural look. For taller walls or heavy, wet ground, brick, block or stone is usually the better choice.

My retaining wall is leaning. Can it be fixed?

A leaning retaining wall usually has a footing or drainage problem, so it often needs taking down and rebuilding properly. We will look at it and explain the options honestly.
